Hi, thanks for stopping by. This is my first blog post EVER. Here you'll get updates about what's happening in my own and my clients gardens, and what's happening at the allotment too. I hope to share interesting horticulture related news articles, as well as follow up on discussions on the Skinny Jean Gardener podcast.
For up to date photos of what's going on you can follow me on Instagram @ebirdhorticulture. It's the only social media I really do. I have Facebook but only go on there for the live podcast recordings every Tuesday between 8 and 9pm (UK Time).
This week on the podcast we discussed getting Horticulture onto the National Curriculum and how this might be achieved. If you missed it it'll be out on the 28th Feb 2019. I also spoke about Taxus bacata (English Yew) and listed off both the helpful and potentially deadly uses for this evergreen tree. Who knew a plant could be both so useful and at the same time so dangerous ?
I'm an avid consumer of podcasts as I work by myself and can't stand listening to music for a full day so tend to listen to podcasts all day everyday ! I hope to recommend different podcasts throughout my blogs - some funny, some serious and over a really wide range of topics.
I'll tell you about my BSc course and how my study of horticulture is progressing and look forward to sharing some of the things I discover throughout my studies. I may also ask for help by asking you to complete surveys relating to gardening.
If you have any questions you'd like me to answer please don't hesitate to send me a message and I'll do my best to help.
This first image shows the first lawn cut of 2019 (20th Feb - WOW). Lawns never look great at the start of the year and this client also has a dog and dogs cause a surprising amount of wear to lawns. With some TLC over the coming months all the lawns that I look after should begin to look much better. If the weather is mild and the grass is looking a bit untidy there is no harm in cutting grass at any time. Just bear in mind that if there is an unexpected frost it may knock the lawn back a little. I check the forecast and temperatures in York are expected to be around 10/12 degrees during the day and only 7 or 8 at night so no fear of frost of the next week or so.
